new moon

new moon

light from the slender crescent rising—
a slanting reflection: the Wheel not yet still

scarcely risen above the ancient fortress
already it’s hidden in towering clouds

the Milky Way hasn’t changed its aspect:
above border mountains the air’s chilled—

in the courtyard this season of White Dew
dark eclipses the round chrysanthemum blooms
